Miss Colombia Catalina Robayo Reprimanded for Going Commando at Miss Universe Appearances

Catalina Robayo controversy
The Miss Universe pageant is coming up soon, and it just wouldn’t seem complete without its fair share of controversy. Helping us out in that regard this year is 22-year-old Miss Colombia, Catalina Robayo.

Robayo allegedly made the rounds at official Miss Universe appearances last week wearing teeny tiny skirts with no underpants.

Colombia had to be spoken to and told she needed to wear underpants as what she was doing was totally inappropriate,” a source was quoted as saying. “People have been pretty upset by it; there have been photos and media appearances where she has completely had her crotch out.”

Paula Shugart, President of the Miss Universe Organization (MUO), said she was flabbergasted when head the news.

“There were several girls in short dresses which is was a little concerning, but when I saw the (commando) picture on the front page of one of the local papers and was very, very surprised,” Shugart said. “Our supervisors talked to all of the contestants about dressing appropriately, and one of our PR people spoke to her (Robayo) and apparently she said she was wearing underwear. But regardless, it created quite a stir here for a few days.”

Bachmann dismisses Obama jobs plan

Bachmann dismisses Obama jobs plan
Republican presidential contender Michele Bachmann has criticised President Barack Obama's plan to create jobs.
She said Mr Obama's approach amounts to more "failed gimmicks".

The Minnesota congresswoman said the plan Mr Obama outlined to Congress would further hurt the struggling US economy.

A tea party favourite, Mrs Bachmann said that even if Congress passes Mr Obama's jobs plan, it will fail.

She said Mr Obama is "politically paralysed" and "philosophically incapable of doing what needs to be done".

Mr Obama proposed a 447 billion US dollar jobs package that includes a payroll tax cut for all workers, a payroll tax cuts for most business, and spending for construction projects.

Mrs Bachmann did not attend the president's speech and said she listened on the radio because her flight to Washington was delayed.

Power outage affects 2M in southern U.S., Mexico

Power outage southern U.S., Mexico
A major power outage knocked out electricity to more than 2 million people in California, Arizona and Mexico on Thursday, bringing San Diego and Tijuana to a standstill and leaving people sweltering in the late-summer heat in the surrounding desert.

Two nuclear reactors were offline after losing electricity, but officials said there was no danger to the public or workers.

San Diego bore the brunt of the blackout that started shortly before 4 p.m. PT.; most of the nation's eighth-largest city was darkened. All outgoing flights from San Diego's Lindbergh Field were grounded and police stations were using generators to accept emergency calls across the area.

Late Thursday, power was restored to some residents in southern California. But officials said most of the others who'd been affected would remain without power all night.

Electricity pylon - power outageImage via WikipediaThe outage was likely caused by an employee carrying out a procedure at a power substation in southwest Arizona and should have been limited to the Yuma area, power officials in Arizona said in a press release. The power company, Arizona Public Service, didn't immediately explain the procedure and were investigating why the outage wasn't contained.

The outage extended from southern parts of Orange County to San Diego to Yuma, Arizona. It also affected cities south of the border across much of the state of northern Baja. Border officials said crossings into California are open.

'Stuart Kuttner rearrested' in phone-hack probe

'Stuart Kuttner'
The former managing editor of the News of the World Stuart Kuttner was rearrested last night by Met officers investigating the phone-hacking scandal, according to reports.

The 71-year-old was first arrested on 2 August on suspicion of phone hacking and inappropriate payments to police, and yesterday was reported to have faced further questioning.

Kuttner, who resigned from the NoW in July 2009, was re-bailed until September.

He spent 22 years as News of the World managing editor after joining the paper from the Evening Standard in 1980.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The 71-year-old man was arrested on 2 August and bailed to a date in August and he has now been bailed to a date in September."

Kuttner's departure coincided with The Guardian's first story detailing new allegations about phone-hacking at the paper.

News International insisted at the time that there was no connection between the two events.

Apple rumors point to cheaper iPhone 4

Apple rumors point to cheaper iPhone 4

txt

The latest Apple rumors suggest that a new, cheaper iPhone 4 is on the way.

While Apple fans await the iPhone 5 (which may launch in early October), Reuters has pulled attention back to the current hardware. Within the next few weeks, Apple will introduce a revised, less expensive version of the iPhone 4, according to the report.

This new model will have 8GB of storage – smaller than the current 16GB and 32GB options – and a reduced price to match. The pared down specs could help Apple target developing countries, where many people aren't ready to spend hundreds on a new phone.

"Apple may want to push into the emerging market segment where customers want to switch to low- to mid-end smartphones from high-end feature phones, which usually cost $150-200," Yuanta Securities analyst Bonnie Chang told Reuters. (The rest of the article relied on unnamed sources). "But I think for an 8GB iPhone 4 the price is hard to go below $200, so Apple will still need a completely new phone with low specifications for the emerging markets."

Steve & Apple Inc.Image by marcopako  via FlickrFor a couple years now, Apple has redesigned the iPhone, but kept selling an older model as a budget option. Right now, you can order an iPhone 4 (16 GB) for $199 or double the storage space for $299 – both deals include a two year contract. Or, if you don't need more storage, high-resolution "retina" screen, and a front-facing camera, Apple offers an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $49, again with a contract. Buying an iPhone without a two-year commitment starts at $649, a price that more accurately reflects the true cost of the device.
